Lessons and Carols
Many years ago, in the early 18th century, Antonio Vivaldi composed Gloria for the girls at Ospedale della Pieta, a home for abandoned children. Rediscovered in the late 1920's, this work has become the most popular of Vivaldi's vocal works. The test for this piece comes from the ancient Christian humn Gloria in excelsis Deo. The hymn begins with the angel's song from Luke 2:14 and is written in the style of psalms idiotic (priate psalms - songs written by individuals in imitation of those found in scripture). this year it will be performed in our church at the Lessons and Carols service. Everyone is in invited to join choral rehearsals.
